The Cannon

WARNING: No Cannon-based data is provided in DR17.

In DR14/15 we supplied an alternate set of stellar parameters and abundances as derived from a data-driven method called the Cannon (Ness et al. 2015, Casey et al. 2016) trained on the calibrated stellar parameters and abundances from ASPCAP.

For DR17 and DR16, no Cannon-based analyses are provided. An evaluation of the Cannon results compared to parameters and abundances derived by optical high-resolution studies showed no dramatic improvement in accuracy as compared to the values from ASPCAP. Perhaps more importantly, the specific expertise for using this tool optimally was limited on the team working on the parameter and abundance analysis. We encourage anyone interested in testing different analysis-techniques on our data to pursue the use of this (or another) tool.
